Our Therapeutic Approach

OUR STORY

I founded Dovetail Mental Health with a deep passion for helping individuals, couples, and families navigate life's challenges and achieve emotional well-being. With a wealth of experience in private practice, group practice, and PHP/IOP (Partial Hospitalization Program/Intensive Outpatient Program), I've honed my skills in both group and individual therapy settings. My journey began with the vision of creating a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where healing and transformation could take place. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with diverse clients and witnessing the incredible resilience of the human spirit.

Welcome to Dovetail Mental Health, where healing and growth are at the heart of our mission. I understand that seeking therapy is a courageous step, and I am here to support you every step of the way.

OUR APPROACH

At Dovetail Mental Health, I firmly believe that therapy is a collaborative process. With my extensive experience in private practice, group therapy, and PHP/IOP settings, I offer a range of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based practices, among others. My diverse experience allows me to tailor my services to your unique needs, ensuring that you receive the most effective and supportive treatment.

Our Dovetail Interns

Johnathan Hayward

Older Teens and Adults

Johnathan is currently a graduate student at Colorado Christian University, where he is pursuing his MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Johnathan works with older teens and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, identity concerns, and life transitions. With a gentle, person-centered approach, he provides a safe and compassionate space where clients feel heard and valued. Together, you’ll explore your story, heal from what’s been holding you back, and find a path forward that feels hopeful and true to you. Drawing from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and solution-focused approaches, Johnathan tailors his counseling to meet the unique needs of each individual. He is also open to integrating faith and spirituality into sessions for clients who desire that as part of their healing process.

Before pursuing counseling, Johnathan spent 15 years in the medical device industry in IT and digital marketing roles. His decision to shift careers grew out of a desire to use his skills of active listening and being present to help those who are hurting. During his graduate training for a master’s degree in history, he served as a teaching assistant for college students. While in his current graduate program, he has also provided telehealth services to college students experiencing a variety of emotional and life challenges. Johnathan brings deep empathy, attentive listening, and a collaborative spirit to his work with clients. In his spare time, he loves reading, going outside for walks and hikes, watching classic movies, traveling and taking road trips, visiting MLB stadiums, and spending time with family and friends.

Kirsten Aurbakken

Children, Adolescents and Adults

Kirsten is a graduate student at West Texas A&M University, completing a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She provides individual therapy to children, adolescents, and adults who feel stuck in painful patterns, overwhelmed by anxiety or depression, disconnected in relationships, or burdened by past trauma. Her holistic approach blends clinical skill with deep compassion, helping clients feel seen, heard, respected, and supported.

Before entering the counseling field, Kirsten spent 16 years as an educator—teaching high school for over a decade and working in elementary education and special education. Her experience with teenagers, neurodivergent children, and their families deeply informs her clinical work. She brings a strong foundation in trauma-informed care, having completed Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) training and applying its principles in both educational and social work settings.

Kirsten is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and integrates elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to support each client’s unique path to healing.

Outside of the counseling room, Kirsten enjoys time with her daughter, family, and friends. She loves dogs, lavender lattes, journaling, and rainy days made for cozy blankets and good books. She believes in the healing power of connection, trust, and laughter—and would be honored to walk alongside you on your journey, one step at a time.
